General Information on Matters Discussed at the 4^th BC Meeting Held on 8 Aug 2020

Please find below the above-mentioned General Information for your attention.

(1) International Malaysia Law Conference

The biennial International Malaysia Law Conference (“IMLC”) was initially scheduled to be held at Pullman Kuala Lumpur Bangsar from 12 to 14 Aug 2020.

On account of the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty as to when health considerations will allow for the organising of large-scale events, the Bar Council had initially decided to defer IMLC 2020 to 2021.  However, because of the continuing uncertainty as regards the pandemic, the Bar Council has now decided to cancel IMLC 2021.  All registered participants will receive a refund.

In addition, the Raja Aziz Addruse Memorial Lecture has also been cancelled for the time being.

(2) 2021 Indemnity Scheme for the Malaysian Bar

The Bar Council has been exploring the possibility of implementing a Self-Indemnity Fund Scheme as an alternative to the current Professional Indemnity Insurance (“PII”) Scheme for the benefit of Members.  Towards this end, the Bar Council considered and adopted the Legal Profession (Malaysian Bar Professional Indemnity Fund) Rules 2020 at the Bar Council Meeting in June 2020.  These Rules have been submitted to the Attorney General for his approval.

While we wait for the necessary approval, the Bar Council has decided to renew the Malaysian Bar’s PII Policy for 2021.  We anticipate that Members should receive the renewal notice from the Broker, Marsh Insurance Brokers (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, by the end of September.
