Informing Local Authorities of Change of Ownership of Immovable Property

The Bar Council Conveyancing Practice Committee (“CPC”) has received a request from Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur to remind Members who are handling sale and purchase transactions to inform their clients of their obligations under section 160(1) of the Local Government Act 1976, which reads as follows:

160. (1) Whenever any rateable holding within a local authority area is sold or transferred it shall be the duty of the seller or transferor and the purchaser or transferee within three months after such sale or transfer to give notice thereof to the local authority in Form I or J of the First Schedule hereto.

Members should take note that it applies to all local authority areas in Peninsular Malaysia.
